Power supplies and electric power

The need of computer systems for electric power has increased enormously in recent years. Not least because of higher and higher clocked and more powerful CPUs and graphics chips. According to the need to provide the Dell Vostro 1500 AC Adapter more electrical energy.

The current or power consumption of the individual components are maximum values that can be achieved under normal operating conditions before. According to AMD, the phrase "power of the CPU, plus 80 percent of the total power consumption of the other components of" a very good indication of the minimum electrical performance of a Dell XPS M1330 AC Adapter. Referring still to efficiency (about 80 percent) are included in these calculations, the power supply should be sized correctly and work perfectly. For our example this means: 90 W + 0.8 W * 190 * 1.25 = ~ 300 W.

An over sized Dell PA-10 AC Adapter is relatively expensive and may require a lower efficiency and therefore ineffective work. However, it has sufficient reserves for future upgrades. An undersized power supply generates high temperatures, as it constantly adjusts the power limit. This affects the lifetime of the Dell PA-12 AC Adapter components. In addition, such a power supply cause interference on the power lines that could affect a computer system negatively.

The values listed in the table serve as guidelines for the calculation of the electrical performance of a Dell Inspiron 8600 AC Adapter. Sun, for example, have current Intel quad-core Xeons and AMD quad-core Opteron processors, the manufacturer has a maximum theoretical power consumption of 150 and 89 W. Also, modern graphics cards are proving to be "power hungry". For example, an Dell XPS M1330 requires almost 105 W of electrical power. A suitable Dell Inspiron 8500 AC Adapter for the above example system with an Intel Xeon and a Dell XPS M1330 graphics card, would have to give formula then a maximum power of about 435 watts.
